Heterogeneous reactions between MBr3 (M = Ga, In) and Li3N were investigated as a potential route to nanocrystalline GaN and InN powders. For M = Ga, the pyrolysis of the as-prepared precursors yielded nanosized GaN and elemental Ga. For M = In, the reactions were highly solvent dependent and resulted exclusively in redox products such as indium(I) bromide, InBr, and elemental In.
