Dear Colleagues,

   The MRS Fall GaN Symposium is being held in honor of Prof. Jacques
Pankove, the inventor of the GaN LED. On Thursday night of the
conference, we will be honoring Prof. Pankove at a banquet hosted by
long time colleagues Profs. Akasaki and Monemar. We hope you will also
participate and we are making every effort to organize a banquet with
excellent food and drink at an elegant site with a reasonable price. We
have narrowed the search for a banquet hall down to Chinatown and the
JFK Library and Museum and would like to solicit your opinion which you
would prefer. If you are interested in attending the banquet, call up

   We also have several other special events planned for this December.
Foremost, we have invited a member of each of the five groups who have
demonstrated GaN laser operation to give an invited talk. We have also
invited three of our future customers to explain the applications and
desired specifications of GaN lasers for the printing, optical
recording and projection display industries in a special session
entitled "The Industrial Applications of GaN Lasers Tutorial".
