Festivities of the Fall MRS meeting, Symposium D.

The non-technical side of the meeting was highlighted by a banquet honoring Professor Jacques Pankove, upon whom the honorary title "Godfather of Gallium Nitride" was conferred.

Festivities

The banquet honoring Jacques Pankove was held in the John F. Kennedy Library. Banquet attendees started with a tour of the museum, where they enjoyed viewing artifacts and video tapes from the Kennedy Administration. They were then greeted by a reception sponsored by AIXTRON, featuring food, drinks, music and a view of the bay. AIXTRON Reception

After the reception, banquet attendees were treated to a festive meal. Prof. Pankove was presented with a CREE full color LED running display which referred to the honorary title bestowed on him: "Godfather of GaN". His former student, Paul Maruska, (the "Father of GaN") gave a reminiscence of the early days of GaN research, as did Profs. Isamu Akasaki, Marc Ilegems, Ted Moustakis and Dr. Peter Norris. Prof. Bo Monemar and Prof. Isamu Akaski were Masters of Ceremonies.

There was also a very interesting review of Prof. Pankove's inventive forays into biology, in collaboration with Ethel Pankove. The Polish table sang a song. There was dancing.

Each attendee was presented with a Nichia Blue LED pen. They are very cool, and great in the disco. Below, the banquet attendees wave their LED pens in a toast to Prof. Pankove.
