Nichia announces laser commercialization

According to Shuji Nakamura, the leader of Nichia Chemical Industries' Blue Laser Research and Development effort, "We announced the commercialization of first InGaN-based violet laser diodes through Japanese Nikkei Sangyou news paper today on January 12, 1999. The characteristics of the violet laser diodes are:

an output power of 5 mW
an emission wavelength of 400 nm
an operating current of 40 mA
an operating voltage of 5V.

The lifetime of the laser diodes is 10,000 hours at room temperature."
