These proceedings are the end product of an adventurous experiment in electronic publishing initiated by Eric Hellman under the auspices of the Materials Research Society. The 48 papers appearing in this volume were first published in the MRS Internet Journal of Nitride Semiconductor Research (http://nsr.mij.mrs.org). Together they represent the 2nd through 49th papers published in the short history of the Internet Journal. In other words, processing the EGW-1 Proceedings amounted to a "Big Bang"-type debut for the MIJ-NSR. Cammy Abernathy, co-editor in chief of the MIJ-NSR, was an indispensible part of the timely processing of the papers through the peer review process. Special thanks are due to the reviewers who volunteered their time to insure the quality of this volume. We would like to thank Bob Novak and Cindy Love of the MRS for their stewardship of the MIJ-NSR. Also, we acknowledge Tilman Beierlein who spent his entire time in Rigi assisting with the acceptance and processing of the submitted manuscripts.
